Day 26: Out of the Smokies

Davenport Gap was the last shelter in the Smokies! There was no bear activity in the night either. We slept in this morning and lingered at camp longer than usual.

It was a beautiful spring day today: tons of flowers, birds, and sunshine. It was also a long uphill today, up to an FAA tower where there was also some trail magic. We got cookies, soda, muffins and jolly ranchers, and took a photo with the Smokies in the background.

We had a shorter day today, a little over ten miles. Overall our bodies are feeling good, but our feet are sore (especially Paul in new shoes). We are camped sort of on our own tonight, which is kind of nice. There is really great camaraderie on the trail but it is a little crowded sometimes. We will be in Hot Springs, NC in a couple of days, then we leave NC and head into TN officially. We’ve been skirting the border about a week now, crossing back and forth multiple times per day.
