Of course it rained in the night, although it was just a sprinkle. We got up early this morning, because on the AT we embrace the suck, and our group of five were the first five on the mountain today. We did get some decent views on the climb, but eventually we were covered in … Read More “Day 182: The Greatest Mountain” »

This morning we woke up early, returned to the campground store for coffee and pastries, and got back on the trail to enter Baxter State Park. We hiked ten relatively flat miles to the Katahdin Streams Campground, just five miles from the top. Although we tried to hike slowly, we got here by 1pm. We … Read More “Day 181: Katahdin Streams” »
Today we walked 18 miles, out of the Hundred Mile Wilderness to Abol Bridge. We’ve done 100 miles in 5 days, and today we made it to the bridge just after 2. We stopped at the Abol Bridge campground for food and beer, plus a light resupply for the next two days. We are 15 … Read More “Day 180: Abol Bridge” »
It’s officially fall, and we could tell today. It was a chilly morning. I heard it was 40 degrees overnight, and today a cold wind blew most of the day. However, it was clear and sunny, and we got our first views to Katahdin. Seeing the finish line so close really made it start to … Read More “Day 179: New Longest Day” »
It started to rain in the night, first just a soft sprinkle but as morning neared it got harder. We got out early as we had a river to ford, and were walking in the old growth forest by 6:30. We crossed over 4 mountains, the last called Whitecap. This was supposed to be our … Read More “Day 178: Whitecap Mountain” »
I am writing this post after the fact because I really didn’t feel like writing anything the past couple days. We went into the Hundred Mile, excited and ready to move, but the terrain proved harder than we anticipated, at least in the beginning. I fell and hit my head the first day, and then … Read More “Days 176 & 177: 2100 Miles” »
We woke up early this morning and made our way down to the road, a 7 minute hike! We are staying at Shaw’s Hiker Hostel in Monson, the last town before the end. No grocery store to speak of here, but between the hostel and the gas station we’ve got enough food to get us … Read More “Day 175: Monson” »
Well, it was supposed to be a thunderstorm last night and it was supposed to rain all day today. Neither of those things happened. We got a few sprinkles in the night and some crazy humidity, but fortunately no rain today. Our plan was to go 17.5 miles and find some spots near a lake. … Read More “Day 174: An Unplanned 20” »
It rained on us today. Maine is already mostly roots and rocks, add some water and mud to the mix and we were slipping and sliding all over the place. Today we crossed the Kennebec River, too dangerous to ford so the official AT route is a canoe ferry. One guy in a canoe, shuttling … Read More “Day 173: Roots, Rocks, Rain” »
It was another beautiful day today, and we hiked through 17.7 miles of relatively easy terrain. We went past 4 ponds and lakes as we followed the Great Carrying Place Portage Trail. We stopped many times to enjoy the views, and we are camped at Pierce Pond tonight. Coyotes are howling in the distance.
