This morning we parted ways with Amy, she headed back to North Carolina while we headed for Pennsylvania. About halfway through the day we crossed the border, meaning we are officially out of the South. We hiked about 18 miles today, the weather was a little cooler which was quite a relief!

We’ve been hiking with Amy through most of Maryland. We went 12.5 yesterday and a little over 8 miles today. We are about ten miles from Pennsylvania, and tomorrow morning she will have to return to regular life again. It’s not easy hiking with people who have a thousand miles of preparation, but she was … Read More “Days 90 and 91: Hiking with Amy” »
Today we hiked out of town with Amy for about ten miles, across the Potomac River and into Maryland. We saw tons of turtles today, though not much other wildlife. We crossed a state park near Antietam toward the end of the day and should be near a lot of Civil War sites in the … Read More “Day 89: Maryland” »
We took a day off in Harpers Ferry, and in addition to our usual resupply chores we also took in some history and visited the ATC headquarters. With only about 16 miles into Harper’s Ferry, we enjoyed a relaxing morning at camp, which really just means we took the time to make coffee after getting up just a tad later than usual. Today was a day of milestones. It started with rain. About 4:30am a thunderstorm began, and it rained well into the morning. It’s always harder to start when it’s wet, so we hit the trail about 8:30 after packing up in the rain. Of course it stopped raining shortly after. We went through Sky Meadows … Read More “Day 86: The Roller Coaster, 1000 miles, and a new state” »
It rained while we were in town yesterday, and while we were grateful to miss hiking in it, today was still extra humid. On top of that, the storm yesterday and another last week caused a huge amount of downed trees on the trail. In some cases it was just a tree trunk to climb … Read More “Day 85: Obstacle Course” »
Today we walked a whopping 2.9 miles into Front Royal. We are staying here tonight, taking advantage of the restaurants and coffee shops in town. Back on trail tomorrow.
While National parks are usually where people go to get away from the modern world and enjoy some nature, the opposite is true for thru-hikers in SNP. Every day we cross Skyline Drive multiple times, never out of range of the noise of cars and motorcycles. Visitors take photos of us like we are part … Read More “Day 83: Leaving SNP” »
This morning we woke up and hiked a few miles to the Skyland Resort, where we got coffee and croissants plus turkey sandwiches to carry out for lunch. We took the coffee to go as well, and Paul got some funny looks from day hikers walking with his poles in one hand and drink in … Read More “Day 82: Skyland” »
