AK to AZ Day 40: Half Day into Whitehorse

August 12
20mi/32km
627ft/191m elevation gain

For once we did not get rained on during the night or early morning hours. Thankfully, the muddy road we took last night was in much better shape this morning as we headed back to the highway. The 20 miles into town were mostly easy, though traffic got a bit heavy as we neared town.

We made our first stop at the bike shop, knowing our bikes are ready for new tires, new chains, and maybe new brakes. We put in a work order with the bike shop, who said they can work on the bikes tomorrow.

We took the bike path along the Yukon River down to the hostel, got checked in, unloaded the bikes, and took them back up to the shop and dropped them off. We hit the grocery store and returned to the hostel for showers before heading out for dinner.

Whitehorse is the biggest town in the Yukon (and Northern Canada) and over 70% of the entire Yukon population lives here. Still, the city is very walkable and bikeable, and small compared to cities farther south. We’ll take a rest day tomorrow and explore a bit more.
