AK to AZ Day 41: Zero Day in Whitehorse

As always, this day off was dominated by chores. We started the day with the obligatory visit (our first) to Tim Hortons, which we found to be quite busy.

From there, we headed to an outdoor store that puts REI to shame with the amount of gear they carry, as opposed to all the “outdoor fashion” that dominates the US retailer. We spent quite a few bucks in preparation for cooler weather ahead. Although the forecast is still warm, we won’t be in another proper city for awhile, so we took advantage of the opportunity to get the extra layers we need now. Paul got a long-sleeved fleece and I got a vest. Paul finally replaced his torn rain pants, I added a warmer pair of socks, Paul added a quick dry towel, and we got more fuel.

We ran a few more errands about town until the bike shop let us know the bikes were ready. We’ve got new rear tires, new chains, and they cleaned the drivetrains and tightened the brakes.

Back at the hostel, we sorted our food, took showers and did laundry, and repacked the bikes. I also did a little bit of research on the next section of road ahead. As usual, a busy day off! Next stop is Watson Lake, about 5 days away, and our final stretch before entering British Columbia. Sunset tonight is 10:02pm, the last night it will be after 10.
