It was a foggy, damp morning today. Fortunately, the sun came out after awhile, and the fog cleared up, and we got amazing views. Traffic was much lighter today, but people really speed on this road, and we were sad to see a dead black bear cub. It looked very recent and put a damper on our mood for awhile. On the bright side, we saw some new birds today! Common Goldeneye and Red Crossbills.
At 28mi/45km, we arrived at Meziadin Junction. We stopped for a quick bite and a soda. Rather than pay $7 to use their wifi, we went down to the EV charger and got on the free hotspot for a few minutes.
We turned off the main Cassiar Highway 37 onto 37A, which heads down to Stewart, BC, and Hyder, AK. This is a side trip, technically. We’ll need back to the junction in a few days and get back on the Cassiar to continue south. We met a German cyclist heading back from Stewart en route from Anchorage to Seattle so we stopped to chat for a few minutes. The views on 37A are amazing, and the traffic is slightly lighter, which is also nice.
We passed the Bear Glacier and it started to rain. Fortunately, it didn’t rain too hard or too long, and we were back in the blue skies after several miles.
We came to a free campsite just 8mi/13km outside of town, so we have an easy day tomorrow. The campground is right on a pond, it has covered picnic tables, we got to pitch the tent on grass instead of the usual gravel, and it’s not very busy. Probably the best we’ve had in BC.
