AK to AZ Day 43: Teslin Lake

August 15
56mi/90km
2000ft/610m elevation gain

We are in the Southern Lakes Region, and it certainly lives up to its name. Lakes are everywhere, and they are massive. All of these waters eventually feed the Yukon River, whose headwaters are south of us in BC. For most of the day we rode along Teslin Lake. Teslin means “long water” and this is also true to its name, stretching for miles.

We are currently just north of the border with BC, and tomorrow the highway will dip into BC before crossing back into Yukon. We’re heading mostly east for the next three days before we officially turn south and leave the Yukon behind for good.

Today is Saturday, and the weather is beautiful, so the RVs are out in droves! The campgrounds are busy, the roads are busy. In the afternoon we stopped at the Teslin Lake campground to see if we could get water. The pump said it was non- potable, so we figured we’d just filter it, but it came out brown, so we changed our minds. I noticed we had service there and realized there was an RV park with a restaurant in Teslin, just 15km (9mi) away. We weren’t expecting hot food today!

We both got a chicken sandwich with fries and a soda at the restaurant and inquired about camping. Paul made friends with the server when he mentioned Star Wars. Camping was $25 and included a shower, so we decided to stay here tonight. The campground sits right on the lake, and it feels so nice to have a shower! Plus we’ll get hot breakfast in the morning before we head out.  A couple people came over to chat and ask what we are up to.
